Capturing the 4 Seasons

May 1, 2017

Spring has always been my favorite season: the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the flowers are in bloom. More daylight also means more time for exploring and taking photos!

Every season has its own unique personality. By making a season part of the narrative of your images, it becomes a character in your story.

Here are 4 tips on how to integrate seasons into your photos.

1. Focus on seasonal activities

Certain activities or sports can only occur at a specific time of the year. By documenting these, you can capture traditions, and first attempts. These activities bring people together, so keep an eye out for connections amongst teammates, friends, and family.

2. Framed by nature

By focusing not only on the subject of your portrait but also their environment, you can create a unique seasonal portrait. How is your subject interacting with nature? Are they climbing a tree, collecting leaves or throwing snow balls? Always keep an eye out for interesting light; it can drastically change the mood of your image.

3. Weather ever changing

Is it a windy, rainy, snowy or sunny kind of day? Is the sky bright blue or are the clouds big and gray? It's great to make the most out of all the different types of weather. Wait and observe the change of conditions. Always make sure to keep yourself and your gear safe while dressing accordingly; fingers tend to freeze pretty quickly (as I've learned in the past!).

4. Showcase still life

With pictures, we can truly freeze time. Your still life photographs can feature subjects that speak to you; flowers, fruits, plants or rocks are just a few examples. During every change of seasons, beauty can be found in unexpected places. By focusing on strong contrasts of colours, shapes and textures, you can create images that are both simple and unique.
